Östersjön

An interactive audiovisual installation, bringing the wavering ecological balance of the Baltic Sea into focus.

During my time at BTH my project group and I shifted our focus toward what is currently happening in the Baltic Sea, which, while based in Karlshamn, was sitting right at our doorstep. Östersjön–as is its Swedish name–has over the years become one of the most heavily polluted seas in the world and its natural flora and fauna has started to rapidly diminish as a result.

Based on UN’s Global Goal nr. 14 (Life Below Water), and inspired by the concept of sonification, we built an interactive sound installation, formed as a timeline from the 70s until present day, shining a light on a few of the most prominent factors of Östersjön’s health decline: acidification, population of fish, algal bloom and (as a result) the area of dead sea bed.

In this project we used an Arduino Uno connected to PIR sensors and LED lights to track the position of the visitors in the room and to light up the ‘timeline frames’. The data being registered was then sent as MIDI messages into Ableton Live to trigger playback of the prepared sound clips at the right time
